Welcome to the rolling science experiment that is my Prius! After moving countries, navigating grad school, and needing both a car and a place to crash (sometimes at the same time), I decided to convert my 2007 Prius into a mini camper on a student budget. This page documents some of the hacks I used for sleeping, storage, bug-proofing, and stealthy comfort.
DIY Bed Platform: I removed all the seats from the back of the car and built a platform from plywood that fits an inflatable camping mattress. To build the platform, I bought plywood, carpet, carpet glue, and hinges from Home Depot and assembled it with a couple of friends in one afternoon—all for under $100. The hinges allow me to fold sections of the platform, making it easier to access storage compartments underneath while maintaining a flat sleeping surface. The carpet helps with insulation and prevents the mattress from sliding around.
Memory Foam Mattress: I tried a few mattresses and settled on this one from MEC: Nemo Quasar Insulated 3D Double Sleeping Pad. It has a combination of memory foam and air, and it fits the Prius space perfectly.
Bug Screens: In summer these are essential! I just use these over-the-door bug screens from Amazon. They aren't the best but they aren't the worst, but they at least allow for ventilation without letting the bugs in.
Main Storage Compartment: There is a surprising amount of hidden storage in a Prius. I removed the spare tire and the spare tire storage compartment entirely and replaced them with a custom-built storage unit made of plywood covered in carpet, with built-in LED rope lights for better visibility. This section serves as my primary clothing storage and is covered by a hinged plywood lid, making it easy to access while keeping everything neatly organized and out of sight.
Under-Bed Storage: The plywood platform provides plenty of storage underneath for clothing, camping gear, and some sports equipment.
Rear Hitch Cargo Carrier: I installed a hitch on the back of my Prius and added a cargo carrier for extra storage. It was a surprisingly easy process and adds a significant amount of carrying capacity for longer trips.
Discrete Hidden Storage: I also removed all the foam from underneath the back of the seats and created a discreet hidden storage compartment under the carpet. This is perfect for storing valuables or emergency items without drawing attention.
